SCF has sponsored the Spring Break medical mission trip to El Paso, TX for over 35 years. We bring about 50 medical & SHP students, residents, and attendings to serve El Paso by operating free clinics in partnership with local churches which highly anticipate our annual presence.
In the mornings, some energetic souls run or hike under a glorious mountain sunrise before joining the group for breakfast. Everyone then congregates for soul-strengthening worship, teaching, and medically-relevant Bible discussion before the host church provides a home-cooked lunch.
After lunch, the group splits into 4-5 clinical teams of 6-8 students and 2 attending physicians to set up free medical clinics at churches and community centers throughout the city. Students have ample opportunity to practice whole-person care in English and Spanish as they conduct histories and physicals, present findings to attendings, develop treatment plans (with the ability to prescribe basic medications from our pharmacy), and sensitively inquire about deeper matters of faith and purpose which are essential to many patients' lives. These clinics are often busy, seeing upwards of 50 patients in an afternoon, especially when our vision team provides free glasses!
When clinics wrap up, evenings are free for dinner, games, hiking, and other forms of team bonding. The final evening is an unforgettable experience - we won't spoil the secret, but there's a Mexican feast and plenty of fun. The El Paso mission trip is a great opportunity for students to transform their studies into service - there's virtually no better way to spend Spring Break.
